IAS Educational Fund Meetings – Lebanon

The IAS Educational Fund meeting, under the theme, Translating HIV science into practice in the MENA region, was held in Beirut, Lebanon, from 28 to 30 June 2019. The International AIDS Society (IAS) organized the meeting in collaboration with the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC).

More than 145 experts in the HIV response in the Middle East and North Africa region participated during the two and a half days of the meeting, including policy makers, clinicians and community representatives to discuss the latest science and innovative approaches on how to address the epidemic in region.

Key topics of discussion during the AIDS 2018 post-conference workshop included HIV and human rights for key populations, with panel discussions covering HIV and the law in the region and reaching key populations. The issues addressed at the scientific symposium included key messages from the latest conferences, HIV cure and developments, the HIV treatment cascade in the MENA region and its epidemiology, in addition to PrEP and HIV prevention, co-morbidities, and HIV and women and the pediatric population. Lastly, the experts and implementers meeting brought together leaders of all ages from the HIV response to develop a framework for the translation of HIV research into local policy and practice.
