Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme
Institution: Hospital do Mal de Hansen – Cumura
Country of work: Guinea-Bissau
What is your motivation for pursuing a career in HIV clinical service delivery?
My motivation and interest in pursuing a career in HIV began when I was a third-year medical student. I was interested in the topic, but my motivation was also driven by the complex burden of HIV and its co-morbidities in Guinea-Bissau. This encouraged me to pursue a speciality in internal medicine with a focus on HIV, and for the past seven years, I have been working as a doctor providing clinical services to people living with HIV.
How do you anticipate using the knowledge learned once back in your home country?
I believe that strong leadership in health is needed to address HIV in the context of Guinea-Bissau. The fellowship will allow me to access opportunities to influence the approach to HIV in different ways on a larger scale.
