Andrea Gramatica joined amfAR in November 2024 as Vice President and Director of Research. Andrea is responsible for shaping the strategic direction of amfAR’s research programmes, including building upon existing research into HIV and other viral diseases, as well as addressing emerging public health challenges.
Before joining amfAR, Andrea served as faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he led studies exploring immunotherapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing elimination of HIV-infected cells in vivo. Prior to that, he held roles as a postdoctoral researcher and staff scientist at the Gladstone Institutes and the University of California, San Francisco, where he contributed to several studies on HIV latency and characterization of the latent reservoir.
Andrea is also an Assistant Professor of Immunology Research at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Associate Editor for Bio-protocol, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal and platform dedicated to improving research transparency and reproducibility.
Andrea earned his PhD in cell biology from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in Berlin, Germany, in 2014.
