The IAS supports the growth of a new generation of HIV researchers, advocates and healthcare professionals in regions where resources for HIV are limited. Fellowship programmes strengthen change makers’ skills, facilitate their integration into international networks, and contribute to strengthening institutions in their home countries.
CIPHER Growing the Leaders of Tomorrow Fellowship Programme
The Growing the Leaders of Tomorrow Fellowship Programme contributes to strengthening HIV clinical research capacity in HIV high-burden countries in central, eastern, southern, and western Africa. The two-year research fellowships provide up to USD 70,000 for a leader to work with an established mentor on a funded research project that addresses key gaps in paediatric and adolescent HIV clinical science.

Research-for-Cure Academy
This annual academy, organized with the South African Department of Science and Innovation and the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, awards fellowships to early- to mid-career investigators and clinical scientists to take part in workshops on HIV cure research with international experts. The academy provides training and resources on HIV cure and reinforces tools and methodologies in line with recommendations from Research priorities for an HIV cure: International AIDS Society Global Scientific Strategy 2021.

Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme

Africa
An initiative of the IAS – the International AIDS Society, the two-year Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme provides expert training in medical management of people living with HIV, with focus on appropriate care for various client groups, including key populations. Selected clinicians from the African continent spend one year in Europe and one year in Africa at clinical institutions with the aim of contributing to improved HIV service delivery in Africa. Mark Wainberg, a Past President of the IAS, was a pioneer for HIV research, advocacy and science.Applications are now closed.

Asia and the Pacific
The two-year programme is an initiative of the IAS Educational Fund and builds on its success in Africa. It will provide expert training in medical management of people living with HIV, from diagnosis to treatment and including co-morbidities. It will focus particularly on appropriate care for various client groups, including key populations, aiming to contribute to improving HIV service delivery in Asia and the Pacific. The selected clinicians will spend one year at a clinical institution in the region and one year completing a research project.Applications are now closed.
Advocacy-for-Cure Academy
This academy, organized with AVAC, awards fellowships to advocates or peer educators to take part in workshops on HIV cure advocacy with international experts. The academy develops fellows’ cure research literacy and reinforces their advocacy and engagement skills in line with recommendations from Research priorities for an HIV cure: International AIDS Society Global Scientific Strategy 2021.

HIV Vaccine Science Academy
The HIV Vaccine Science Academy awards fellowships to early- to mid-career HIV vaccine researchers in central, eastern, southern and western Africa to take part in workshops on vaccine research. The academy supports change makers in establishing themselves as independent researchers and team leaders in their institutions. It also contributes to the development of a sustainable international network of African researchers.

HIV Vaccine Advocacy Academy
The HIV Vaccine Advocacy Academy awards fellowships to 15 early- to mid-career advocates and peer educators from central, eastern, southern and western Africa to take part in workshops and develop their careers in HIV vaccine R&D advocacy with global experts.
The academy is a space where fellows can interact with leading researchers and advocates in the HIV vaccine R&D field. Fellows build literacy in HIV vaccine research, as well as advocacy and engagement skills.
The academy’s mission is to equip advocates who will lead the change towards a world that is free of HIV as a public health threat.
