Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme
What the Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme does
The Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme, sponsored by the IAS, improves health services by training HIV physicians in Africa and Asia-Pacific to provide care that is tailored to various client groups, with a particular emphasis on stigma-free services.
The programme honours Mark Wainberg, an HIV researcher and activist who helped identify lamivudine, an important antiretroviral for HIV.
The Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme in context
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), gaps in HIV service delivery in Africa and Asia-Pacific have been worsened by COVID-19 pandemic disruptions, climate change, limited resources, instability and economic crises.
The knowledge I gained from the fellowship has been instrumental in my work to improve the care and support for people living with HIV.

The Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme in action
The Mark Wainberg Fellowship Programme aims to enhance HIV service delivery in Africa and Asia-Pacific. It selects clinicians from these regions to spend one year in Europe and another in Africa or Asia-Pacific, receiving comprehensive training from leading clinical institutions. This exchange between Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific fosters the sharing of a diversity of medical perspectives, ultimately contributing to advancements in HIV service delivery and care.
My experience as a Mark Wainberg Fellow was truly life changing.
