Jean-Louis Excler is a paediatrician and vaccinologist who worked in Africa for several years. Since 1991, he has been working extensively on HIV vaccine clinical development as Head of HIV vaccine clinical development for Sanofi Pasteur and then as Scientific Director of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the US Military HIV Research Program in Rockville and Maryland, USA, and Bangkok, Thailand. From 2002 to 2012, he worked for the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) as Senior Medical Director in India and Switzerland, responsible for the clinical development of several HIV vaccine candidates in India, the US, Europe and Africa.

Jean-Louis served as Senior Consultant for the US Military HIV Research Program (2010-2015) for the advanced development of HIV vaccine candidates in Thailand. From 2015 to 2018, he joined the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Republic of Korea, as Head of Clinical Development and Regulatory. Since then, he has worked as Programme Director of New Initiatives at the International Vaccine Institute. He currently lives in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
