What inspires you to work in the HIV field?

Losing my uncle, my father’s only brother, to HIV-1 inspires me to work in the HIV field with the hope that I will be among the scientists who will one day see an HIV-1 vaccine. Seeing the burden of HIV-1 ART and its side-effects further drives my passion to find a cure so that people do not have to take ART drugs all their lives.

What are your goals as an IAS change maker?

My goals are to:

  • Continue working on HIV-1 research.
  • Get into advocacy for continued funding for HIV research because despite 40 years with no vaccine, we keep learning something new about HIV-1, and I believe we are closer to an HIV vaccine than ever before.
