Ole Schmeltz Søgaard

Infectious disease physician and professor, Aarhus University Hospital
Denmark

Ole Schmeltz Søgaard is an infectious disease physician-scientist at the Department of Infectious Diseases at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, and a Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University. With a deep passion for understanding and addressing infectious diseases, Søgaard has dedicated his career to advancing research that bridges basic science and clinical medicine.

After earning his PhD in HIV epidemiology in 2011, Søgaard shifted his focus to experimental medicine, specializing in the investigation of novel and repurposed therapeutic compounds. His translational research aims to develop innovative treatments and potential cures for viral infections, particularly HIV-1. In 2015-2016, he had the opportunity to expand his expertise as a visiting researcher in the Nussenzweig Laboratory of Molecular Immunology at The Rockefeller University in New York.

Using a highly collaborative approach, his work primarily centres on unravelling the complexities of viral pathogenesis and persistence. He has led numerous clinical investigations into groundbreaking therapeutic approaches, including immune modulation, broadly neutralizing antibodies and strategies to reverse HIV-1 latency. Søgaard is committed to translating scientific discoveries into meaningful advances for people living with HIV.
