Elena Moreno has more than 20 years’ experience in clinical research and public health. She has worked in pharmaceutical industries (MSD, Janssen), healthcare data science companies (IQVIA), health research institutes (Barcelona Global Health Institute, Ifakara Health Research Institute), non-governmental organizations (Médecins du Monde), public hospitals and the Namibian Health Ministry. She has managed projects that have been funded by key donors, such as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID, EDCTP and AECID.
Throughout, Elena has been committed to advancing the field of infectious disease research, mainly HIV, malaria and HPV, through high-quality clinical trials (Phase 1-4, including controlled human malaria infection) that have generated robust data and contributed to development of new treatments and vaccines.
Among her achievements were being involved in setting up the Clinical Trial Unit at Ifakara Health Institute in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, and contributing to the successful integration of the pharmacovigilance system into the public health programmes of the Ministry of Health in Namibia. In January 2022, Elena joined the IAS as Senior Project Manager for the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise.
Elena is a pharmacist with a Master’s in public health (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), a Master’s in clinical trials management (College of Pharmacy, Madrid) and a postgraduate diploma in International Cooperation Project Cycle Management (Open University of Catalonia).
