Joseph G Joyce, PhD, is a Distinguished Scientist in Vaccine Process Research & Development (VPRD) at Merck & Co. with responsibility for developing and leading various scientific strategy initiatives, including a Scientific Excellence and Innovation Committee, due diligence assessments, improvement of operating interfaces between process research and development groups and early discovery, and increasing VPRD’s influence in the external scientific field. Joe received his PhD in biochemistry from Lehigh University and has been with Merck for 33 years. His experience spans both discovery and process R&D as an individual contributor and a people manager.

Joe has broad and deep subject matter expertise across a range of vaccine modalities. Some important highlights of his career are development of RecombivaxHB®, Gardasil®/Gardasil-9® and Vaxneuvance®. Joe led an investigational HIV-1 vaccine programme and currently co-leads early development teams for pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and oncolytic virus programmes.
