Educational tours

Conference delegates can choose from two educational tours, organized by IAS – the International AIDS Society – with civil society partners and local community-based organizations (CBOs) in Kigali. The goal is to exchange knowledge, best practices, successes, challenges and innovative solutions through dialogue and experiential activities.

Tours are in English and are free for delegates.

TOUR 1: Visit to Amahoro Human Respect

This tour will offer a deep dive into how local initiatives at Amahoro Human Respect (AHR) are driving meaningful change and promoting dignity for all. It is designed for conference delegates who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by key populations and LGBTIQ+ individuals in Rwanda and the impactful work being done to address these issues. During the visit, participants will learn about AHR’s four programmatic areas: quality and stigma-free healthcare; gender equality; social inclusion; and economic empowerment.

About the organizer:

Amahoro Human Respect is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights. The organization works with marginalized and vulnerable groups, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people, teenage mothers, people living with HIV, people who inject drugs and other marginalized groups. Its mission is to strive for the respect, protection and fulfilment of human rights through research, advocacy, capacity building and provision of legal aid. 

TOUR 2 – Visit to Health Development Initiative

This tour will offer an immersive experience at a Health Development Initiative outreach centre, its Nyamirambo branch. It will provide an in-depth exploration of Rwanda’s progressive approach to community health and harm reduction services through the Tubiteho project. It is designed for conference delegates who seek practical insights into health service delivery for key populations, particularly people who use drugs, sex workers and other vulnerable groups.

About the organizer:

Health Development Initiative (HDI) is an independent, non-profit organization based in Kigali that strives to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans. HDI brings together a team with vast experience in medicine, public health and community development to support community and health systems and empower individuals with tools and knowledge to advance the health of their communities. This is so that all Rwandans may lead healthy lives, free from preventable disease and premature mortality. As part of its activities, HDI focuses on sexual and reproductive health by providing access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information and services, as well as upholding human rights, by working with government institutions, policy makers, civil society organizations, communities and individuals to advocate for health-friendly policies and strengthen accountability on their implementation.
