The SPD politician from northern Germany has been the Federal Chancellor of Germany since December 2021, leading the country's first “traffic light” coalition in the Federal Government. (The nickname is based on the parties’ colours.) Olaf Scholz already knew the government district in Berlin well, having previously served as Federal Minister of Finance (2018-2021), Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs (2009-2011), and a Member of the German Bundestag. He was also Hamburg’s First Mayor from 2011 until 2018. Olaf Scholz studied law and worked as a lawyer until 1998.
