pattern

Welcome to Day 1 of IAS 2023, the 12th IAS Conference on HIV Science ! Whether you are joining us virtually or in person at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, we invite you to immerse yourself in the science and conversations of the days ahead.

Coming up today

Convert to your time zone through the IAS 2023 programme .

07:30 AEST
Satellite sessions get underway and run until 16:30 today.

15:00 AEST
Laura Waters moderates the satellite, “Ignite change: Championing HIV status-neutral care together”, organized by Gilead. An expert panel explores how a status-neutral approach can improve care and eliminate structural stigma.

17:00 AEST
Please join us for the IAS 2023 opening session, with the keynote address by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Uncle Shannon Ruska will perform the Welcome to Country ceremony, reminding delegates of the Traditional Owners of the land on which the conference is taking place. International Chair Sharon Lewin and Local Chair Charles Gilks will welcome delegates and officially open IAS 2023; Alegra Wolter from Suara Kita, Indonesia, will give the community welcome; and Mark Butler, Minister for Health and Aged Care, will welcome delegates on behalf of the Australian government.

The ceremony will take a moment to commemorate Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, brought down over Ukraine on 17 July 2014. Tragically, all on board were lost. Among them were former IAS President Joep Lange, Jacqueline van Tongeren, Pim de Kuijer, Lucie van Mens, Maria Adriana de Schutter and Glenn Thomas, who were on their way to AIDS 2014, the 20th International AIDS Conference, in Melbourne, Australia. This will be followed by a performance by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Meet the IAS change makers

Each day, the Daily Digest follows the IAS change makers at IAS 2023: carefully selected HIV researchers, advocates, healthcare providers and others we educate to drive an evidence-based HIV response that puts people first.

Today’s change maker is Pauline Mary Amuge, a paediatrician providing HIV care and conducting clinical and operational research at Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation-Uganda clinic at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

At IAS 2023, Pauline is presenting progress on her project, focused on providing tuberculosis preventive treatment for children and adolescents in existing HIV care models.
